Are New Cars Getting More Expensive to Maintain and Repair?

I can remember not that long ago that when you bought a new car, it was like opting to buy a peace of mind. You paid more up front, but in return you got something dependable, covered by warranty, and relatively inexpensive to maintain for the first several years.
That idea isn't quite as simple anymore. Modern cars are unquestionably more advanced than the cars people were driving 10, 20 and 30 years ago. While they are much safer, more comfortable, more fuel efficient and packed with technology that would have seemed like science fiction not that long ago, they do come with a lot of added complexity. The problem is that all of these advanced technologies come with a price that may not be fully disclosed or understood by many new car buyers.
The concept is rather simple; for the most part complexity tends to drive up maintenance and repair costs. The issue is that most people do not realize that until something breaks, it requires immediate repair. A repair that once involved replacing a relatively inexpensive mechanical component can now involve replacing an entire assembly, programming a computer, removing multiple other components, or connecting the vehicle to expensive diagnostic equipment before anyone can even figure out what went wrong. For someone on a tight budget, that can turn an otherwise minor problem into a surprisingly large bill.
The downside of complexity
Modern vehicles contain an incredible number of electronic modules, sensors, actuators and computer-controlled systems. Even relatively ordinary functions can involve electronics that simply weren't there in older vehicles. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing, those same electronics can help in more streamlined diagnostics and troubleshooting. The problem comes when complexity is coupled with cost cutting. This is something that a lot of car manufacturers focus on. Many car manufacturers have stopped making some vital components as well as making systems serviceable. This is often done for packaging reasons and assembly cost cutting as well as raw material cost cutting. Forcing the owner to replace the entire system or a major component when they inevitably fail.
Consider something as ordinary as a PCV system. It has been around in one form or another since the early 60s, equipped on almost all combustion engine vehicles. Its main job is to allow positive crankcase ventilation. In older vehicles it uses a simple check valve, which could be easily inspected and replaced during routine service. The PCV valve was inexpensive and on most older vehicles it was fairly easy to get to.
However, on many newer vehicles, the PCV function can be incorporated into a much more complicated assembly, such as a valve cover or integrated oil-separator system. If one relatively inexpensive component inside that assembly fails, the solution may be replacing the entire component rather than simply replacing the little valve that went bad. Many car manufacturers would purposely integrate the PCV valve into one-time-use plastic fittings and couplers, not allowing for disassembly and replacement of the check valve itself.
The result of this type of engineering allows the manufacturers to make more profit by selling you an entire PCV system rather than a small replacement check valve. The owner should also expect a much more expensive replacement cost, as the new PCV systems require more labor and more shop time. And that's just one example. It is no longer uncommon to see what was once a $20 problem becomes a $500 + nightmare.
The benefits of owning an older car
An older car certainly isn't guaranteed to be cheap. Rubber deteriorates, seals leak, suspension components wear out, and engines and transmissions eventually need attention. Anyone claiming that an old car never needs repairs is being unrealistic. But there is an important distinction between an old car that has been neglected and an old car that has been properly maintained.
A 10- or 15-year-old vehicle with a good maintenance history can sometimes be a remarkably sensible form of transportation. The best part is that someone already assumed the bulk of the depreciation and unless the car is a collectable, chances are you can grab it for just a fraction of the cost of its modern equivalent.
Additional benefits of buying an older, well-maintained vehicle have to do with how it was engineered. That built-in obsolescence that we are all tired of living with is less pronounced. You could always upgrade the head unit for a more modern Apple CarPlay or Android Auto-compatible system for less than the cost of an average repair of most modern vehicles. The older car will have fewer complicated electronic systems to fail. If you buy a popular make and model, it is likely that lower-cost aftermarket as well as factory parts can be readily available. The best part is independent mechanics are generally more familiar with conventional mechanical systems, which often means less shop time for common repairs and maintenance procedures.
Most importantly, many repairs can still be performed at the component level. That's something consumers should not overlook. When comparing vehicles, people naturally look at fuel economy, horsepower, safety ratings, reliability scores and purchase price. Repairability rarely makes the list. To factor in the vehicle’s actual pros and cons, repairability must be taken into account. Keep in mind that even when comparing two vehicles that have similar reliability records, they can still have dramatically different ownership costs. The true cost of ownership is calculated when something eventually goes wrong. If one vehicle has a simple, independently replaceable component and the other requires an entire integrated assembly, the repair bills can look drastically different.
The Green Argument Doesn't Always Tell the True Story
There is another part of this discussion that doesn't get nearly as much attention: what happens to all of those replaced components?
Many automakers promote efforts to reduce emissions, improve fuel economy and make vehicles more environmentally friendly. Those goals are important; however, some of the green marketing done by car companies can be viewed as disingenuous. The way that some car companies prop up their good deeds when it comes to the environment oftentimes sum up to nothing more than clever marketing and PR gimmicks.
Don’t get me wrong, we should not argue against new cleaner technologies simply because older cars are more repairable; however, car company environmental claims deserve to be looked at from more than one angle. Replacing an entire assembly because one relatively small component has failed creates more material waste than replacing the individual component would. The discarded assembly may contain plastic, rubber, metals, electronics and other materials that may not be recyclable by conventional methods. Multiply that by millions of vehicles and millions of repairs, and the amount of material involved becomes significant. We are creating harder-to-recycle waste that is filling our landfills, waterways, lakes and oceans.
This is where some of the industry's environmental messaging can feel contradictory. A company can promote the environmental benefits of a particular engineering change while simultaneously designing components and systems that are difficult to repair or replace individually. From a marketing perspective, the change may be described as improving efficiency, reducing emissions or simplifying manufacturing. But from the perspective of someone standing in a repair shop looking at a large assembly that needs to be replaced because a small internal component failed, the environmental argument can seem considerably less convincing. The question we must ask is whether "green movement" is actually driving the decision or whether it is simply a convenient marketing message attached to a decision that also benefits manufacturing efficiency, parts sales or service revenue.
That doesn't mean every environmental claim made by an automaker is dishonest. Far from it. Car manufacturers have made leaps and bound in using technologies to reduce greenhouse gases. At the same time consumers shouldn't assume that every change advertised as environmentally beneficial automatically results in less waste throughout the vehicle's entire life cycle.
A Car That Lasts Longer Is a Green Car
There is an argument for environmental responsibility that is rarely as exciting as announcing a new electric vehicle or an innovative new material. Often times the best and most environmentally sensible thing you can do is to simply keep the car you already own running. Avoid the temptation of buying a new car with all the bells and whistles, as manufacturing a new vehicle requires enormous amounts of raw materials, energy and transportation. Replacing a perfectly usable car simply because it has become a few years old doesn't necessarily make environmental sense when that vehicle could have provided many more years of reliable transportation.
This is particularly true when the older well-maintained vehicles have a history of good reliability. Many models from popular brands like Toyota and Honda have a proven ability to last for hundreds of thousands of miles. In fact, some legendary drivetrains are so revered for their longevity they tend to sell for a premium even when they have been used for over 100,000 miles, in some cases even over 200,000 miles. Cars like the 1995-2007 Toyota Land Cruiser are beloved for their rugged reliability. When you just do a little online research, you can find legendarily reliable cars like the 1992-1015 Honda Civic, almost any year of the Toyota Camary and many more.
Keep in mind that a well-maintained engine can run efficiently for a very long time and replacing worn components individually rather than entire assemblies can reduce the amount of material that ends up in the waste stream. There is a certain irony in throwing away a large assembly because a relatively small serviceable component has failed and then calling the replacement vehicle "greener." The environmental equation is much more complicated than the advertising sometimes makes it appear.
Older Doesn't Automatically Mean Better
Of course, there is a catch.
Buying an old car simply because it is cheap can be a terrible idea. A poorly maintained 15-year-old vehicle with 200,000 miles and a history of neglect could easily cost more to own than a newer vehicle. Deferred maintenance has a way of coming due all at once. That's the reason why condition and maintenance history are far more important than age alone.
A 12-year-old car with regular oil changes, documented maintenance, a solid transmission, a healthy cooling system and no major accident history may be a much better purchase than a five-year-old car that has been abused.
Regardless, which option you decide when buying a pre-owned vehicle, it is worth having an independent mechanic inspect it prior to committing to the purchase. The goal isn't to find a car that has never needed a repair but instead to find one that has been taken care of.
Final Thoughts
Don't automatically dismiss an older vehicle because it isn't new. Even if you can afford to pay for a new vehicle, a well-maintained older car with a proven drivetrain and good history can sometimes be one of the most fiscally responsible purchases you can make. And perhaps the greenest car isn't always the newest one sitting on the showroom floor.
